Car and van hire in Menorca

Menorca is one of the Spanish Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, which also include the neighbouring islands of Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera. The island is known for its stunning natural landscapes, megalithic remains and luxury hotels. Pristine landscapes and ongoing conservation projects have garnered recognition from UNESCO, which declared the island a Biosphere Reserve.

The island's historic capital is the Ciutadella de Menorca in the west, with the main airport near Mahón at the south-eastern point. If you're wanting to enjoy the natural beauty of the island and its stunning beaches, a hire car is the best option for getting around.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car's office is located at Menorca Airport, near Sant Climent on the ME-12 motorway, allowing you to pick up your vehicle upon arrival and get straight on the road to explore the area.

Our vehicles for hire in Menorca

Most of Menorca's main attractions are located around the coast, so renting a car is undoubtedly the best way to explore the whole island. We also offer economy vehicles and, if you want a little more glamour, luxury vehicles, both available with either an automatic or manual transmission. If you need a GPS, a child seat or to add another driver to the contract, just ask and we can offer you a solution.

The airport is located about 28 miles from the historic enclave of Ciutadella de Menorca, located on the west coast of the island. Ciutadella, the old town and the port at night

Discover Menorca

There is so much to see and do in Menorca, including visiting the island's two capitals. Mahón is the more modern capital, with one of the largest natural harbours in the world and ferry departures to Barcelona and Valencia on the Iberian Peninsula. Ciutadella is the old capital and is especially known for its historic buildings, narrow streets and its port with an unusual elongated, narrow shape.

Menorca has several prehistoric sites which have been exquisitely conserved, such as the Naveta d'Es Tudons, a megalithic chamber tomb, and the Bronze Age village of Torre d'en Galmés. You'll find the best views from the road up to Monte Toro, the highest point of the island with panoramic views of Menorca. Beyond the views, you'll find a church and a bar/restaurant at the top.

Cala Mitjaneta in Menorca

The beautiful beaches of Menorca

Cala Macarella, Cala Turqueta and Cala Mitjana are sheltered coves with sandy beaches, located just a few minutes by road on the south coast. Cala Macarella has a beach café with toilets and a shower, which makes it a very popular place to spend the whole day. Menorca. If you want to take a short walk to a pristine natural beach, visit Cala Mitjana, a 20-minute walk from the car park through a rugged pine forest, but the spectacular beach is well worth the journey. If you prefer parking next to the beach, Son Bou is the longest beach on the island and one of the most accessible with facilities nearby.

On the other side of the island, to the north, Cala Pregnonda is home to an impressive beach, which is also accessed on foot from the car park, so is not ideal for young children or people with mobility problems. About 20 minutes away, Fornells beach is much more accessible and, given its proximity to the city, it also offers plenty of restaurants to escape from the sun for a while.

La Mola Fortress, Fortress of Isabell II, Menorca

Menorca is ideal for families

Menorca is hardly lacking in stunning beaches, but because of its rugged terrain and difficulties when it comes to access, not all of them are suitable for young children or the elderly. The most accessible beaches are Son Bou, Cala en Porter, Cala Galdana and Santo Tomás, all of which have parking nearby so you don't have to take a long stroll to the sand.

A visit to the Menorca Zoo will be an absolute hoot for the whole family. Here, you can find an interesting mix of native and exotic animals, many of which come from rescue centres across Europe. It's a lovely mix of a petting zoo and a wild animal park, with a children's play area and a coffee shop. Less than 20 minutes by road, where the port of Mahón meets the sea, you'll find the Fortress of Isabel II, a 19th-century fortified building in an excellent state of preservation with fabulous views, canyons and dungeons. The fort covers a fairly large area, so you may want to hire one of the electric carts available to get around the area.

Driving around Menorca

  • Priority rules: As a general rule, you must give way to vehicles on your right at junctions. On roundabouts, vehicles that are already on the roundabout have priority.
  • Speed limits are slightly lower than elsewhere, so pay attention to the signage.
  • Wearing a seat belt is mandatory in both the front and rear seats.
  • Children less than 135 cm tall must use a booster seat or an approved restraint system. If you need one of these restraint systems, you can reserve and pay for a child safety seat when you reserve your rental vehicle.
  • Using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited unless a hands-free system is available.

Parking

If you park in an area with discontinuous blue or green lines, you should buy a parking ticket from a machine. The colour green generally indicates spaces for residents. However, these spaces can be used by visitors as long as the correct fee is paid and the ticket is displayed on the windscreen. Parking is usually free on Sundays and bank holidays, but we recommend that you check the information on the machine, as this can vary by city and area.
